"WE MUST ALWAYS BEGIN WITH LIBATIONS" - A LETTER FROM OUR CURATOR
i dedicate this exhibit to my grannie annie, who has shown up as calla lilies and spiders. who weaves a web of homeplace between my grandma mamie, my mother, my sister, and me, who weaves my mother closer to her sister, who helps us all as we learn how to heal at home inside the first homes we knew, each other,
our mothers’ wombs
& to my grandma mamie.
and to my grandma ethel mae <3 and her mother. and our entire lineage
"the roots and routes" of black geographies.. all the spaces and places our peoples have known.. our mothers and grandmothers and great grandmothers have known and made and shaped in search of freedom.. the movements and migrations..
and to the Coalition of grandmothers that guide me as a collective of angels on my path

i also dedicate this exhibit to my mother. and all the homegirls [insert our artsy aunties and all the hood folks we come from
honoring our mothers, the first homes we ever knew. and our grannies. honoring the black geographies that carries us home. and the homegirls, the homegirls we heal with, from deep east oakland to east palo alto and beyond
all the women who taught us how to make homes out of ourselves. the home making praxis we each carry with us to every Black geography we migrate to, how we make and mold home from card board boxes and expand the livingness of Blackness

we put out a call to black womxn, and homegirls from all around the world responded! this exhibit features over 100 works by Black womxn and girls, from the Milk Honey Bees collective in London, England to Ghetto Mantras from Detroit to XYZ in Philadelphia, Boston, etc.
